WHAT IS LUDOTECA MAYOR AND WHAT IS IT FOR?

A Ludoteca is a space similar to a library but it has games instead of books.

Ludoteca Mayor is a service aimed at the elderly, that incorporates a variety of games specially adapted to the needs of this age group.

The didactic playroom works in an itinerant model, which allows us to reach the set of institutions and groups where older people meet: retirement centers, sport clubs, libraries, churches, neighborhood associations, geriatrics, groups of older adults linked to state entities, etc.

The mobility of the Ludoteca is an excellent alternative to serve communities of grown ups, especially those groups that have displacement difficulties, since any association, school or local headquarters can become a transitional Ludoteca.

WHY ARE WE DEVELOPING THIS PROPOSAL?

The organization and implementation of a Ludoteca of this characteristics is related, among others, to the following aspects:

 • The need for facing the lack of recreational spaces for older people.
The posibility of providing leisure and recreational days for both adults and grown ups which contribute to a healthy recreation and an improvement in their quality of life.
The opportunity to offer to the interested parties an environment of interaction, favoring the socialization, the habits of coexistence and shared fun.
•  To help older people reinforce the coordination of their senses, through activities that promote an optimistic attitude helping to avoid sedentarism, anxiety and stress.

HOW WILL THE LUDOTECA WORK?

The Ludoteca considers the existence of a recreational fund that includes a series of traditional board games adapted to the needs of the elderly and alternative board games especially designed for this age group: Lottery games, Playing cards, dominoes, word games, puzzles, building games, etc.

The Ludoteca will also have a team of monitors with experience in the elderly and also familiarized with the meaning and characteristics of this proposal.

The Ludoteca will establish agreements with the interested institutions, through which they will organize playing days - about two or three hours each -, that will be developed by the monitors, in the headquarters of the respective institutions.
On the occasion, the participants will be offered varied alternative board games to be experienced in small groups, between four and six participants each.

Different working modalities will be programmed depending on the characteristics of the participants, the time arranged for the accomplishment of the activity, etc.

Older adults playing the classic games board, elaborated
in a larger size to facilitate its use in this age group.

WHAT BENEFITS ARE OBTAINED FROM THE LUDOTECA?

Participation in this experience has multiple benefits through which it is possible to:
Encourage human interaction and social integration.
Promote intergenerational integration.
Achieve relax, facing the stress and tiredom of modern life.
To recover knowledge, traditions and experiences that empower in older adults their perception of self-esteem.
Develop playing skills, spontaneity and openness to new recreational forms.
To promote well-being and personal satisfaction.
Further communication, friendship and interpersonal relationships.
Help older people to know their rights and defend them and contribute to the local social dynamics.

HOW WIll THE ACCESS TO THE LUDOTECA BE?

Prior to the launch of the Ludoteca, a campaign of dissemination will be developed between the different entities of group of adults and older persons in the Buenos Aires city.

Subsequently, interested institutions can request Playing Days through the web, in which up to 40 people can participate simultaneously, during two or three hours.
